Day 13 Pocatello, ID. 86 miles. 1,200 ft climb

Everyone is getting focused on the next 3 days, when they enter Wyoming and have the biggest climb yet into Jackson---5,500 ft.  But first they had to get through today, through some of the least interesting terrain yet---very flat, endless horizon, endless sky---Big Sky country. One hiccup occurred where the road crews once again had set up road blocks for construction.  This time, the road was gone--torn up for repaving. Most riders detoured around, but not everyone.

Not Everyone Took The Detour
Still following the Oregon Trail, they came to  Register Rock where pioneers stopped to sign their names.  (They didn’t call it graffiti back then).   After about 30 hot miles, they hit headwinds at about 25-30 mph, which slowed everybody down considerably., but did provide some cooling. They formed pace lines to pull each other through.  For non-cyclists, this is when the riders essentially get in a tight line behind each other, so they can get in the draft of the rider in front.  It really cuts down on the wind resistance.  It's hard on the lead rider, of course, who has to punch through the wind, so that gets rotated every few minutes.  Riding in a tight formation is definitely a skill to acquire.  ABB doesn't really want them riding in a peloton (that massive, tightly packed group you see in the Tour de France--which started today, by the way).  But at times, like today, it's the best way to give everyone a helping hand.  Terry had a good day---so far, he's had all good days!  Knock wood.  Given the flat and boring terrain, riders were able to have long conversations as they rode, which Terry enjoyed.   When we spoke, he was off to get a hot tub soak.
